One of the greatest games of the century i suppose. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a new installment in the Call of Duty series, has once again created history in United Kingdom by breaking previous records of game sales. The game was stated for release on November 10 and the day has come and gone. The first-person shooter sold an estimated 1.23 million units and grossed around £47m, according to industry body Elspa. The previous record holder, Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV), did not have any chance!
Lot of gamers gathered for the release at various gaming shops in the UK at around 00:00 hours. Talk about crazy gamers!! These people would rather play Modern Warfare 2 and die a hero rather than doing something not so cool.
Michael Rawlinson, director general of the entertainment and leisure software publishers association (Elspa) stated, “These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that videogames are now mainstream in the UK. Our form of interactive entertainment has completely come of age.”
Publishers of Modern Warfare 2, Activision, predicttotal sales of 3m across the UK.
Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision, describs it as “one of the largest entertainment launches of any media of all time”.
Modern Warfare 2 gives players the chance to be a member of a military strike force that takes on a Russian ultra-nationalist terrorist group.
“This is specifically intended for an adult audience and accordingly has emotional, adult content,” said Mr Rawlinson. As an 18-rated videogame, it is important that this game is not played by children, and parents should be appropriately vigilant.”
